Welcome
Welcome to Every Child Every Time – our commitment to prevent and relieve pain. We, nurses, therapists, child life specialists, pharmacists, psychologists, physicians, patients and parents, have come together to form Every Child Every Time. Every Child Every Time works under the umbrella of the Child Health Program of Shared Health Manitoba and the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health of the University of Manitoba. Every Child Every Time has been funded by the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba.
Our motivation
Many injuries and illnesses are treated much better today than some years ago. However, pain related to injuries, illnesses and medical treatment remains a problem for children of all ages. We know today: Suffering from pain very early during the first months and years of life can influence how the body handles pain for the rest of a lifespan. Fortunately, even though some pain is inevitable, we’ve learned how to prevent and relieve most. Therefore it is time for a culture change in our vision of pain management.
Our mission
Every Child Every Time aspires to prevent and relieve pain as best as possible and at any time for all children and adolescents who receive healthcare in Winnipeg, and, in the longer term, throughout the province of Manitoba, Canada Every Child Every Time will
- advocate for children to have access to all possible tools at any time to prevent and reduce pain.
- educate healthcare providers to offer all possible tools to their patients at any time to prevent and reduce pain.
- raise awareness about all options available on how to prevent and reduce pain and to help patients and families to advocate for themselves and their children.
- put guidelines into practice to prevent and relieve pain by all possible means at any time for all children.
Every Child Every Time will ensure to prevent and relieve pain from medical treatment, acute pain from injuries and illnesses, pain in palliative or end of life care, and chronic pain.
Our path
To improve treatment of pain at Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg and beyond, we will follow the 5 principles of Childkind International. Childkind International is an international, non-profit organization that promotes pain prevention and relief for all children. The 5 principles include 1) facility wide policies on pain prevention and management to demonstrate the institutional commitment, 2) ongoing education of staff, trainees, patients and families on how to prevent and reduce pain, best practice in 3) pain assessment, 4) pain treatment and prevention, and 5) ongoing evaluation of clinical practice and quality improvement. Childkind International certifies healthcare facilities such as hospitals that have committed to effective pain treatment as a core institutional value and have implemented respective tools in their daily care of children. We, Every Child Every Time, think that Childkind Certification is the way to go in Manitoba.
